A Guide to Kalamazoo League Formats, Fees, and Membership Value

Joining a golf league at Crestview Golf Club in Kalamazoo is the best way to get consistent practice, measure your progress, and build camaraderie. As Crestview invests in new ownership and facilities, this is the perfect season to commit to one of our weekly leagues. Here is a breakdown of what you need to know before you sign up.

Finding Your Kalamazoo League and Partner

Crestview and other area courses offers a variety of leagues designed to suit every golfer’s schedule and style. At Crestview, you can get involved in a variety of ways:

  • Men’s, Women’s, and Senior Leagues: These are usually stroke-play or match-play formats, often featuring two-person teams. They are a reliable way to get a competitive 9-hole round in, at least once a week.
  • Couples/Mixed Leagues: Typically played in a relaxed scramble or best-ball format on weeknight evenings, these leagues prioritize fun and social interaction over fierce competition.
  • Independent/Substitutes: If you don’t have a partner, the Proshop staff can often pair you with a team looking for a sub, or you may be able to sign up as an independent player depending on the league rules.

How to Choose a Partner: Pick someone whose availability matches yours and who approaches the game similarly (e.g., both competitive, or both purely social). It doesn’t hurt to plan ahead for subs for days one of you will be unavailable.

Understanding the Time and Fees

Leagues run for approximately 18 to 28 weeks, starting in late April or early May and running through September. This means a commitment of just one day a week.

  • Time of Day: Most competitive leagues tee off in the late afternoon (4 to 5:30 p.m.).
    • Benefit: Playing later in the day offers cooler temperatures and takes advantage of post-work availability.
  • Typical League Cost Structure (Estimated):
    • Weekly Cart & Green Fee: Based on area course data, a 9-hole round with a half-cart averages $22 – $25 per player per week.
    • League Dues/Entry Fee: A one-time fee of $40 to $75 per player is often collected upfront to cover administration, prize pools, and the season-ending banquet/dinner.

The Ultimate Value: Membership vs. Weekly Fees

While you can pay the weekly green and cart fees (totaling up to ∼$600 for a 25-week season), a Crestview membership offers an unmatched financial benefit: League play is included in both 60th Anniversary Membership specials.

  • Individual Membership ($600): Your weekly green fees are completely covered. You only pay the optional weekly league dues and the ∼$12 cart fee.
  • Couple Membership ($1,965): Your green fees and cart fees are entirely covered for both partners. You only pay the optional weekly league dues.

By becoming a member, your entire league experience transforms from an ongoing expense into a free weekly benefit, allowing you to play more golf for the same seasonal cost.

A Word from Bob Bales, PGA Professional

“The most valuable aspect of joining a league, especially for the serious golfer, is the time commitment. You are guaranteed a set time and day to play 9 holes against competition for up to 28 weeks. That consistent, weekly practice under pressure is what fundamentally lowers your scores. I can attest that consistency is the key to lasting improvement, and league play provides exactly that.”
